What is the SFC license in Hong Kong?

The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong was established in 1989 as an independent statutory body responsible for regulating the securities and futures markets in Hong Kong. The Securities and Futures Ordinance and its subsidiary legislation grant the SFC the power to investigate, correct, and discipline in order to ensure a fair and orderly securities market. The SFC operates independently from the Hong Kong government, with its main functions being to formulate and enforce market regulations, investigate matters in the securities industry, grant or revoke licenses for regulated activities in securities and futures, and oversee the operation of exchanges, clearing houses, share registration institutions, and alternative trading platforms, among others.
In simpler terms, if a company (not a bank or recognized financial institution) or individual wants to engage in regulated activities (such as securities trading, futures contract trading, etc.), they must obtain the necessary qualifications, which means obtaining a license from the SFC to legally engage in the regulated activities. This license is commonly known as the SFC license. Upon obtaining a license for regulated activities, the organization becomes a "licensed corporation," and the individuals engaged in regulated activities are collectively referred to as "licensed persons."
If you wish to inquire about basic information of a licensed person or licensed corporation, such as the license number, license category, and affiliated company, you can click on the SFC's public register link: https://apps.sfc.hk/publicregWeb/searchByName , and search by entering the full Chinese or English name, or the central number.
If you have a complaint about the services provided by a licensed corporation or licensed person, you should file a complaint with the SFC.If you are dissatisfied with the services provided by a licensed corporation or licensed person, you should file a complaint with the SFC.
