Why can’t you learn the practise questions by rote when studying for the HKSI Licensing Examination (LE)?

May 18, 2022

Students who have taken/ who are going to take the HKSI LE should know the HKSI study note is a several-hundred pages, paragraph form booklet illustrating the exam coverage. Not to mention the length of the text, the expression of concepts requires readers’ intense concentration. So some candidates think that doing only the practise questions should be a quick way to do revision.

In fact, the exam experts strongly advise against studying only the practise questions and reciting the answers. It is more effective for memorising if you spend more time on understanding the concepts. Don’t take shortcuts, and don’t just recite the questions blindly. All the effort can go to waste if the candidate only relies on memorizing the answer to the question without understanding the reason or principle behind it. Questions may appear on the exam with the structure changed, some words changed, the sentence reorganized, packaged into scenario-based questions, or they ask the principle or rationale behind, compare the relationship between different concepts, etc. Candidates who simply recite practise question answers have a high chance of not knowing how to answer because they do not have a deep understanding of the concept, or even choose the opposite answer and lose points.

In addition, the scope of the HKSI LE is very broad and wide while a human’s short-term memory is relatively unreliable. Normally, a human brain does not allow you to memorize so many concepts that you have not understood. There is a good chance that after you “memorise” the entire test question, the first half of the test has already been forgotten. The exam fee of HKSI LE is not cheap. We are talking about over one thousand Hong Kong dollars for each subject. And if you do not pass the exam you need to study again, increasing the time cost. Therefore, candidates who are not gifted with photographic memory should not try to take risks and waste the exam fees and time by ignoring the study note.

Suggested Way to Study

We suggest the candidate prepare for the examination by the following steps:

1. Study 1 chapter in the study manual

2. Finish the relevant topic in the Pass Paper Question Bank

By spending 20-25 hours doing the revision, about 80% of our candidates can pass the exam in their first attempt.
