Does the IA recognize insurance-related work experience gained outside of Hong Kong?
Some students will ask us what kind of work experience is considered as insurance related industry experience, because their academic qualifications do not meet the requirements. Some people might have the misconception, thinking that without a license, how can one have industry experience? In fact, in addition to sales of insurance policies and handling of insurance sales, IA will also recognize other types of industry experience (such as research, underwriting and compliance) as relevant experience.
Note, however, that insurance experience outside of Hong Kong will not be considered for exemption. Therefore, insurance front-line sales, underwriting, claims, front, middle and back office experiences obtained overseas will not be recognized by the IA as an exemption condition for academic qualifications. Whether it’s insurance experience in Mainland China, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Austria, Czech Republic, Russia, South Korea, North Korea, Japan, India, Indonesia, Spain, Portugal, Thailand, Ukraine or the Netherlands, as long as you are not engaged in the insurance industry in Hong Kong, your experience will not be accepted by the IA as a reason for waiving academic qualifications.
